have yourself a merry little christmas now
Well, it seems to me that the best relationships - the ones that last - are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.

It’s a look of realisation, like the full ramifications of Mulder’s return have just hit him. His work is done. It’s over. Scully doesn’t need him anymore. He put so much of himself into this search, into this fight, and he and Scully have been through a lot together, he has lived and breathed this job and now it’s gone. He has to let go of that bond he has formed with Scully, and presumably, Kersh will put him back on normal FBI cases, and maybe he’ll have that successful career, but maybe it won’t be that fulfilling. He doesn’t have much of a personal life outside his work, but he had connected so strongly with Scully while they were working together. And now Mulder’s back, and Scully’s happy, and Doggett has honoured the promises he made. And now he’s alone.
.
Oh, and to cap it all off, let’s just acknowledge 1. the bruises on Doggett’s face from when he fought Krycek, trying to save Mulder’s life, and 2. the fact that Mulder repays everything Doggett has done, for him, for Scully, and for The X Files, by treating Doggett like crap and basically being the biggest douche ever. Nice job, Mulder, you wanker.
